They serve businesses, the government, non-profit institutions, trade associations and individuals. Brooks Pierce works with clients on a regional, national, and international level. Their multi-faceted approach of the solutions offered by Brooks Pierce derives from the expertise resident in this firm. Their unique philosophy results in powerful analysis and effective solutions for our clients.
Brooks Pierce recently renovated and expanded the firm’s office in Raleigh, North Carolina, in anticipation of future growth. Looking to celebrate its corporate culture and recruit top talent, Brooks Pierce partnered with design and architecture firm Gensler to transform its workplace into a law firm of the future.
Founded in 1897, Brooks Pierce has a rich history and a well-earned reputation both within North Carolina and nationally for tackling complex legal problems and for precedent-setting litigation. The firm has offices in Greensboro, Raleigh and Wilmington, North Carolina.
The firm’s Raleigh office is located downtown within walking distance of the State Capitol and governor’s mansion and in close proximity to Research Triangle Park, one of the fastest growing tech sectors in the US and known as a hotbed of innovation. Brooks Pierce wanted this office to reflect the sophistication of the area and wanted to not only pay homage to the firm’s legacy, but also to its future. Brooks Pierce’s culture and values include a “flat organisation” and “collegiality” among others, bringing to mind the transparent and collaborative spaces seen in contemporary design.
The renovation process, which was spearheaded by partner Charles Coble, began with a full Workplace Performance Index (WPI) analysis. The WPI is Gensler’s pre- and post-occupancy survey tool that gathers employee input on workplace performance factors, using the feedback to inform design decisions prior to the project’s start and measuring the design’s success after the project’s completion. Gensler was able to tailor a research-based design specific to Brooks Pierce's organisational needs and goals. It was evident that a stay-inplace renovation made both practical and financial sense.
The two-floor full renovation provided a modern environment that stands in stark contrast to the firm’s previous traditional workplace. A more efficient layout takes advantage of the uniquely shaped office space, accommodating more attorneys per square foot and maximising both daylight and downtown views. With a new multipurpose conference centre space, Brooks Pierce was also able to increase its ability to host internal and external events.
The use of glass is abundant in the individual office fronts, doors and sidelights, allowing more natural light to flow through the space. The office's open glass corners play a tremendous role in helping everyone in the office feel more connected, both to each other and to the outside environment. Additionally, a monumental staircase serves as a link between floors, encouraging more collaboration and open dialogue between attorneys and staff. A bridge on the 17th floor transforms the visitor experience, connecting to the library and café below and opening up the lobby area.
The office also houses a large, newlyacquired collection of North Carolina art, including pieces by Thomas Sayre, George Bireline, Herb Jackson, McDonald Bane, and Claude Howell. The lobby features a sculpture by Paris Alexander that was specifically commissioned for the new office space. The collection includes over 50 works of North Carolina art. The law firm's newly renovated space allows Brooks Pierce to communicate its values and culture of interaction, collaboration and transparency. The renovation sets the firm apart from other law firms in the region and positions it for future recruitment of top talent in the burgeoning Research Triangle Park region.
