Michael Lintern-Smith Admitted to the Law Society of Hong Kong’s Roll of Honour
In recognition of his services to the legal profession and the practice of law in Hong Kong, Michael Lintern- Smith (from GGI member firm Robertsons Solicitors & Notaries) has been admitted to the Law Society of Hong Kong’s Roll of Honour. Appointment to the Roll of Honour is a rare achievement, and there are fewer than fifty appointees on the list in the history of the Law Society.
Michael was admitted as a solicitor in England and Wales in 1981, and then as a solicitor in Hong Kong in 1982. He served on the Council of the Law Society of Hong Kong for more than two decades, from December 1995 to May 2018, during which time he was vice president from May 2002 to May 2004 and president from May 2004 to May 2005. Michael has served on many of the Law Society Committees over the years, including chairing the Standing Committee on Standards and Development, the Standing Committee on Policy and Resources, the LegCo Liaison Group, the Working Party on Solicitors’ Accounts Rules, and the Working Party on Chambers Practice; and serving as member of the Guidance Committee, the Consents Committee, the Working Party on Limited Liability Partnerships, and many others. He has chaired the Anti- Money Laundering Committee since 2004, a committee with a very heavy workload dealing with the impact of the FATF (Financial Action Task Force) Recommendations, and the legislative amendments to Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorist Financing (Financial Institutions) Ordinance on the Law Society’s regulatory role.
On his appointment, Michael had this to say, “I am grateful to the Law Society of Hong Kong for recognising my service to the profession and appointing me to their Roll of Honour.” He adds that, in light of current circumstances, he is delighted to see the city is still functioning. There has been lighter usage of public transport, with commuters keeping a reasonable distance and 100% of them wearing masks. Everyone has been sensible in obeying the restrictions. They have been through this before with SARS and people are more prepared than elsewhere.
