Internal communications within a company: Interaction between marketing staff and others to maximise performance
By Armen Danielyan, Delovoy Profil
Internal communication is the backbone of any successful business team. Its main purpose is to create a unified information environment, develop corporate culture and help foster common awareness of professional and personal interests of employees. Practice has shown that companies which were able to create an information environment with active channels of interpersonal communication among personnel became highly successful in being able to face and overcome various business challenges with which they were confronted.
If every employee has correct understanding of the current challenges and tasks that are facing the company, this contributes to them being better able to fulfil their respective roles in the ongoing processes taking place within the organisation.
However, in order for companies to successfully fulfil their internal communications functions, the information transmitted by them to the staff must be accurate, clear and honest.
A simple example would be a lack of reliable information from management about a certain business event that employees deserve to know about, which will definitely result in unneeded speculation and rumours. Consequently, internal communications will take on a destructive function making it difficult for people to work, and this will erode confidence within the team.
Creating a trusting relationship based on true and complete information about various business activities and events taking place within the company is one of the top priorities of a company’s management team.
Employees are the most valuable resource of any business organisation. Awareness of this fact has helped the management of many companies to realise that there is a strong need to create a respectful and mutually beneficial relationship with its “main resource”.
HR and PR professionals have also joined in the process of building such effective internal communications. Their main task in this area is to help the team to reach better mutual understanding by creating a common “information space” and eliminating gaps in such communication.
Our company has been working very actively to create formalised and effective intra-company communications aimed at establishing a unified system of interaction among staff. Such a system should affect staff at all levels and everyone must be involved in the process.
Our company’s management is aware of the need to create successful personal communication with its employees and endeavours to carry this out in a variety of ways, including business meetings, corporate outings and bowling competitions.
Employees learn about all key changes in development strategies, as well as the successes and failures of the company at first hand and crucially, they are therefore able to fully trust the information, since they know that it is reliable.
To help ensure that communication is successful, the main task of the HR department is to improve communication channels. This is accomplished by developing internal communication tools which practical experience has shown to be effective.
These include building a local information intranet, issuing a monthly corporate news magazine and conducting business games. All these measures help unite our team and improve teamwork. In the near future, we plan to create a corporate radio and video magazine.
The ever-changing external environment and the increasing competition from companies hoping to attract the best employees in the employment market compel us to keep looking for new tools that can help us bond as a cohesive team capable of achieving even greater success.
